As an artist I am drawn towards ideas that relate to the inevitability of destruction and deterioration in all living things. Cyclical themes of genealogy, transmission, and erasure are constants within my work. To approach these ideas, I undertake idiosyncratic ways of making like experimenting with the material translucency of high flow acrylics or inks, as well as working with light sensitive materials such as cyanotype. My creative practice involves collaborating with aleatory materials and exploring their physical properties. Through the temporal nature and ephemerality of my choice of medium and application, I allow chance to enter into the work. The possibility that these delicate materials will be smudged, crushed, or effaced incorporates itself into the pieces. Similar to the decomposing fate of all organisms, the more I handle and share my pieces, the more compromised their initial composition and presence becomes. My work thus reflects on the temporality of existence, serving as a personal reassurance of the constancy of this state, speaking to one’s inability to change this facet of life. This slow yet constant nature of change is what fascinates me and serves as the basis for my works.
